Project Overview

When Leeds Art University commissioned a massive mural for their new art wing, Flip was excited to take on this  monumental project. The mural, measuring over 10 meters high and 40 meters wide, would become a bold  statement piece on the university’s campus. From the moment we received the inquiry, we knew this was a project  that would challenge and inspire our team. The brief called for a design that not only captured the university’s  spirit but also demanded precision in both the planning and execution of the installation, given the scale and  visibility of the mural.

Surveying: Strategic Planning for a Massive Mural

To begin, we conducted multiple surveys of the site, which presented its own challenges as the building was still  under construction during the early stages of the project.

• Detailed Site Assessments: Several site visits were necessary to assess the scale and structure of the mural  space. The ongoing construction required us to be adaptable, measuring out precise dimensions and planning  how best to implement the mural within a dynamic work environment.

• Collaborative Approach: We collaborated closely with Leeds Art University’s creative team and construction  managers to ensure the mural would align perfectly with the architectural vision of the new art wing. • Project Feasibility: From the very  rst phone call, we worked to develop a feasible plan for translating the  large-scale design into a functional, installable artwork. This planning phase was critical to ensure that the  project could be delivered within the timeframe and to the high standards the university expected.

Stenciling and Painting: Precision Meets Creativity

Once the surveys were complete and the construction phases coordinated, we moved into the mural production  phase, which required a mix of artistic craftsmanship and precise techniques.

• Vinyl Cut Stencils: Given the scale of the mural, we chose to use vinyl cut stencils for precision. The stencils  allowed us to maintain consistency across the large surface and ensured every design element was placed  exactly where it needed to be, avoiding any room for error.

• Collaborative Design Execution: Working closely with our in-house designers and art workers, we pieced  together the mural using these stencils. This meticulous approach ensured that each section of the artwork  would align perfectly once painted on the wall, creating a cohesive and bold  nal image.

• Hand-Painting: Our team hand-painted the mural on-site, using high-quality, durable paints suited to the  external environment. The blend of modern stencil techniques and traditional hand-painting gave the mural a  unique texture and vibrancy, making it a standout feature of the university’s campus.

Installation: Flawless Execution on a Grand Scale

The  final stage of the project was the on-site installation, which took careful coordination and precision due to the  mural’s size.

• High-Access Techniques: Given the mural’s 10-meter height, we used sca old towers and high-access  equipment to safely reach every section of the wall. Our team worked tirelessly to ensure that each stencil was  applied and painted perfectly, from the top of the mural to the base.

• Attention to Detail: Throughout the painting process, we maintained a sharp focus on the alignment and  ow  of the design. Every line and color transition was executed with care, ensuring the mural was visually striking  from all angles on the university’s campus.

• Efficient Completion: Despite the scale of the mural, we completed the project within the tight timeline set by  the university, delivering a visually stunning result just in time for the new art wing’s opening.

The Result: A Bold Artistic Statement for Leeds Art University

The final mural at Leeds Art University is a bold and dynamic piece of public art that showcases the university’s  commitment to creativity and innovation. Spanning over 40 meters in width, the mural has become a central  feature of the new art wing, inspiring students, staff, and visitors alike. Flip Creative Solutions is incredibly proud to  have been a part of this project, using our expertise in large-scale art installations to create something that will  stand as a symbol of the university’s artistic legacy for years to come.
